Motives

Motives are one of the core gameplay elements of Vitare and are essential to ensuring your persona remains happy.

What are Motives?

In order to keep your persona happy, alive and well in the world of Vitare, you will need to tend to their motives.

Motives are the mental and physical requirements for your persona - things like hunger, hygiene and energy. These are all essential for your persona's existence so that you can engage with the world, use objects and avoid their mood being low!

A low mood or motives means your persona might refuse to use certain things, or even hit a critical threshold where something happens such as peeing on the floor in front of everyone!

Motives to Maintain

There are currently three motives you need to keep satisfied to ensure your persona remains motivated:

  • Hunger - maintained by eating food
  • Hygiene - maintained by going to the toilet and keeping your persona clean
  • Energy - maintained by sleeping and napping

Each motive impacts your persona's overall mood which is why it is essential they are all maintained. The best place to maintain your motives are on Service or Residence lots which have platinum motives and higher motive replenishment rate.

Platinum motives are when a motive goes beyond 100% so that your persona can do things for longer!

The current motives are all possible to maintain yourself, though as we progress through the Beta we will likely add more which may require help from other players.

Neglecting Motives

Failing to maintain your motives and keep them in check can lead to some unwanted side effects as you play. Don't expect your persona to do much if they're in the red!

If your persona's mood is too low, they may refuse to use an object or perform a social interaction - or stop if they were using one. Each object has different requirements to use them. For example, a treadmill might need a specific energy level whereas skilling requires an overall mood to be over a certain threshold.

There are also visual events that occur when thresholds are passed - for example, a persona with low hygiene will start to get a cloud of stink that follows them and will eventually pee on the floor. A persona with low hunger will be crying (a lot!).

In the future, we plan to add animations such as persona's passing out or even death (stay tuned).

Motive decay

Motives decay as you play Vitare - just like they would in real life. The speed in which they decay can depend on a few things:

  • Lot category - Some categories have faster, or slower, rates of decay. Learn more about lot categories.
  • Object use - Using certain objects will replenish your motives, but others will make them decay faster. For example, skilling will deplete your energy motive faster.

Motives will replenish when you are offline over a 24 hour period and will never decay if you aren't in a lot.
